“Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Sequel: What’s the Latest Update?”

Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga” had high hopes as one of 2024’s more ambitious releases. With Costner’s success on “Yellowstone” paving the way, the Western saga was planned as a four-part epic, with Costner even investing his own money to bring his vision to life. However, the film’s reception was mixed, leading to a sluggish start at the box office, where it struggled to recoup even half of its $50 million budget. The second chapter, which has an additional $50 million budget, now faces its own challenges.

Originally scheduled for release on August 16, 2024, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” has had its release date postponed. This decision by New Line Cinema and Costner’s production company, Territory Pictures, was made to allow more time for the first chapter to gain traction as it transitions from theaters to streaming and VOD. Despite the setbacks, Territory Pictures remains optimistic, as stated in their announcement:

“The audience response to ‘Horizon’ and the enthusiasm for the continuation in Chapter 2 have been incredibly gratifying. Kevin made this film for those who love cinema and want to embark on a journey. The support from film fans and theater owners as they experience the first chapter reinforces our belief in the films and the audience. We appreciate their support and look forward to expanding the window to enhance the experience of seeing Chapter 2.”

The exact release date for “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” is still pending, but it is set to make its debut at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2024. Costner expressed his excitement about this development, noting:

“My dream was always to showcase ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two’ at the Venice Film Festival. The decision to premiere Chapter One earlier in the day and then follow with the World Premiere of Chapter Two that evening highlights the festival’s belief in how the two films complement each other and their support for my vision as a director.”

The success of Chapter 2 at Venice could be crucial in generating buzz and shifting the narrative around the saga’s future.
