“Kevin Costner Breaks Silence on Divorce from Christine Baumgartner”
Yellowstone star Kevin Costner has made a rare public statement regarding his divorce from ex-wife Christine Baumgartner. The couple, who were married from 2004 until their split in 2023, finalized their divorce settlement earlier this year. In a recent interview, Costner discussed their separation, noting that they “just weren’t able to go the distance.”
He emphasized the importance of focusing on their children, sharing custody of their three kids. “It’s really about the children,” Costner said. “You just do it. You keep talking, coaching [the kids], and staying interested in what they’re interested in.” Reflecting on his earlier marriage to Cindy Silva, which ended in 1994, he remarked on the challenges of managing family life post-divorce: “It was something I had to think about 20 years ago when I agreed to marry again. I had been divorced once and that was tough with kids.”
Costner acknowledged that while Baumgartner was a “good partner” and “good mother,” their marriage didn’t last. He admitted that he is still grappling with the impact of the split. “That was my fear, and so I’m kind of living with that right now. But that’s life,” he said.
In addition to discussing his personal life, Costner touched on his professional commitments, including his work on the multi-part film Horizon: An American Saga. He explained that “so many things were in motion” with the project, which left him with little room to address personal matters.
Costner also addressed the casting of his son Hayes in Horizon. Despite Hayes’ lack of prior acting experience, Costner defended his decision, stating, “I don’t automatically give parts to my children because I know how coveted these roles are.” He added that if his children aren’t interested in acting, he won’t force it upon them. However, he saw the role as an opportunity to keep his family close during the filming process. “I was away from home and needed my family close to me, and it was a way for me to have him near. I thought he was just beautiful in the movie,” Costner said.
