“Tom Selleck’s New Look is a Far Cry from His Blue Bloods Character”

Tom Selleck, best known for his iconic mustache and acting prowess, was recently spotted in Thousand Oaks, California, sporting a drastically different look. At 79, the Blue Bloods star was seen walking through a parking lot with a bushy gray beard and tousled hair, a stark departure from his usual polished appearance.

During this outing, Tom embraced a relaxed style, wearing black shorts, a loose-fitting black T-shirt, and a navy blue shirt layered over it. This casual ensemble was a far cry from the neatly groomed look he typically sports on screen, where he’s often seen with his signature mustache and meticulously styled hair.

Selleck’s mustache has become nearly as famous as his acting roles. Although he shaved it off early in his career for various parts, his most beloved performances have featured his now-iconic facial hair. Initially, for his role as police commissioner Frank Reagan in Blue Bloods, Tom contemplated going clean-shaven, believing that a mustache might not fit the character’s role as a New York City police chief. However, CBS decided otherwise, and Selleck’s mustache remained a key feature of the character.

Reflecting on his mustache, Tom shared, “I was born without it. It’s not as important to me as it seems to be to people. It’s something I live with. I don’t resent it, but there’s more to the work than a mustache.”

With Blue Bloods concluding its run after 15 seasons this fall, Tom has been vocal about the show’s cancellation. CBS announced in November 2023 that the series would not continue beyond its 15th season. Tom expressed hope that CBS might reconsider, emphasizing the show’s strong performance and dedicated fan base. “We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast. We’re winning the night,” he noted, adding that the cast remains enthusiastic and the show is still producing high-quality episodes.

Despite the show’s ending, Selleck is not ready to retire. He stated, “I love the work. Sometimes the hours are a little harder because I’m older, but so what? I want to work as long as they’ll have me.”
