Kevin Costner Attributes ‘Horizon 2’ Theatrical Release Cancellation to First Film’s Modest Box Office Performance

Kevin Costner addressed the decision to scrap the theatrical release of his second “Horizon” film during a Venice Film Festival press conference on Saturday. He suggested that the move was likely a reaction to the first film’s underwhelming box office performance.

“The first film didn’t achieve overwhelming success,” Costner acknowledged. “I’ve had many movies that didn’t perform well initially but have stood the test of time.”

Costner explained that the original plan was to release “Chapter Two” six weeks after “Chapter One,” but the studio later decided against it. Despite this setback, he found a silver lining as it allowed him to screen “Horizon 2” at the Venice Film Festival. “This turn of events actually aligned with my initial plan to release films about five to six months apart and attend Venice. Had the film been released earlier, it wouldn’t have been shown here,” Costner noted. He expressed gratitude to Venice’s artistic director, Alberto Barbera, for making this screening possible. “Alberto bringing this here was a dream come true and prevented it from being squashed,” Costner said, adding with enthusiasm, “Venice keeps coming to my rescue!”

“Horizon 2” was a late addition to Venice’s lineup, with its out-of-competition premiere announced on July 31. This followed the cancellation of its U.S. release, originally scheduled for August 16, due to the first film’s disappointing performance, which saw a $11 million return on a $100 million budget.

Despite these challenges, Costner’s resolve to continue with the four-part series has only strengthened. “When faced with difficulties, my desire to continue only grows stronger,” he reflected. “It’s a story and a piece of entertainment that I believe can endure over time. Rejection fuels my determination.”

When asked if “Horizon” reflects any current political messages as the U.S. approaches a presidential election, Costner clarified, “It’s not a political message but a reminder of the hardships faced during this journey.”

Costner returns as director and star in “Chapter Two,” which also features Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, and Danny Huston. The film continues the narrative of the first chapter, depicting the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. Alongside directing and starring, Costner co-wrote the script with Jon Baird and produced through his Territory Pictures.

The series, planned as a four-part epic, is already progressing with “Chapter 3” currently in production. Principal photography on the third installment began in May and is expected to conclude next year. Costner teased “Chapter 3” as being particularly impactful, describing it as “devastating” and hinting at the ongoing struggles the characters will face.

As for the future of the series, Costner remains committed despite uncertainties. “I don’t know exactly how ‘Chapter 3’ will come together at this moment, but I am determined to make it,” he said.
