Horizon: An American Saga Finds New Life on Streaming Amidst Uncertain Future
“Horizon: An American Saga” has managed to hold on to some momentum following a lackluster box-office performance that cast doubt on the future of this Western film series. Despite a rocky start, Chapter 1 of Kevin Costner’s ambitious project is seeing some success on streaming platforms, even as its future remains in question.
According to Reelgood, Chapter 1 ranked as the 10th-most popular movie on streaming in the U.S. between August 29 and September 4. Although it slipped from its previous position at number five, it still managed to bookend a chart led by David Leitch’s action-comedy, “The Fall Guy,” on Peacock. The film also saw notable success on video-on-demand (VOD) charts following its digital release in July.
However, despite these streaming victories, the prospects for further installments of the Western drama appear uncertain. Chapter 1 struggled both critically and commercially upon its theatrical release on June 28. The film earned $36 million against its $50 million budget and holds a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews critiquing its character development and storytelling. Consequently, New Line Cinema and Territory Pictures postponed the release of Chapter 2, initially scheduled for August 16, to allow audiences more time to engage with Chapter 1’s narrative.
Chapter 2 did make its debut at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this month, yet there is no update on when it might be released. Production on Chapter 3, which began in May, has recently encountered delays due to financial issues. Meanwhile, Chapter 4 is still in the early stages of development.
Kevin Costner, who is deeply invested in “Horizon” as the star, co-writer, and director, remains committed to the project. First conceived in 1988 and pitched to Disney in 2003 following his previous directorial effort, “Open Range,” “Horizon” explores the American West’s expansion during the Civil War era. The film features a star-studded cast including Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Sienna Miller, Giovanni Ribisi, and Michael Rooker. Costner has personally invested substantial finances into bringing the four-part series to life.
Despite the challenges and negative feedback surrounding Chapter 1, Costner is undeterred. He has criticized dismissive reviews and maintained that the series addresses significant themes that will resonate over time. Costner remains steadfast in his determination to see the full four-part saga completed and released, despite the hurdles faced.
