How Will Yellowstone Manage Without Kevin Costner?

Paramount Network’s acclaimed Western drama Yellowstone is set to return for the second half of its fifth and final season (unless the rumored plans for a sixth season come to light) in November 2024. Fans are left questioning how the series will fare without its star, Kevin Costner. The show, which focuses on influential rancher John Dutton (Costner) and the legacy he leaves for his family across several generations, has been a major success and has spawned various prequels and spin-offs.

Costner’s star power has contributed significantly to the show’s cinematic quality, and his absence in the final episodes raises concerns about the series’ ability to deliver a satisfying conclusion. With Paramount also preparing The Madison, another spin-off featuring Michelle Pfeiffer set in modern-day Montana, it’s uncertain how Yellowstone will wrap up without Costner’s leadership.

Kevin Costner’s Departure from Yellowstone

In May 2023, Paramount announced Kevin Costner’s departure from the series, following his role as John Dutton through the first four seasons and part of Season 5. Costner’s final appearance was in the episode titled “A Knife and No Coin,” where his character is left reeling from a shocking suggestion by his daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) about her adopted brother Jamie (Wes Bentley).

The abrupt end to John Dutton’s storyline in the mid-season finale left fans expecting Costner to return for the final six episodes to provide closure. Instead, Costner left to focus on his ambitious film project Horizon, which struggled at the box office, grossing only $34 million worldwide against a $100 million budget. The film’s poor performance led to its removal from theaters and a delay in its sequel’s release. Given this, it’s challenging to see how Yellowstone can effectively conclude without Costner.

Can Yellowstone Thrive Without Costner?

The lack of a proper resolution for John Dutton’s character has led to diminished trust among fans regarding the series’ ability to wrap up other storylines satisfactorily. While there is intrigue surrounding Jamie’s fate, particularly concerning the secretive “Train Station” burial ground, many viewers may have already disengaged due to Costner’s sudden departure.

Additionally, the entertainment landscape is highly competitive, with numerous options available. Yellowstone fans can look forward to completed series like 1883, the upcoming second season of 1923, and the new season of 6666 expected on Paramount+ in late 2024. The introduction of The Madison further complicates the appeal of sticking with the main series.

Given the complex timeline and numerous spin-offs, Yellowstone may struggle to maintain viewer interest in its final episodes, especially without Costner to provide a compelling and conclusive finish to the series. For those still following, Yellowstone is available for streaming on Peacock.
