Kevin Costner Discusses His “Yellowstone” Departure and Possibility of Returning as John Dutton: “Anything is Possible”

Kevin Costner Talks “Yellowstone” Exit and Potential Return as John Dutton on “CBS Mornings”

Kevin Costner recently confirmed that he is leaving his iconic role as Montana rancher John Dutton after five seasons of “Yellowstone,” sending shockwaves through his fanbase. In an interview with “CBS Mornings” co-anchor Gayle King, Costner opened up about his decision to step away from the hit show, revealing that balancing the series with his film project, “Horizon: An American Saga,” proved challenging.

Costner, an Oscar-winning actor and director, explained that while “Horizon” was always a priority, it ultimately took precedence over “Yellowstone.” The demanding schedules of both projects made it difficult to manage, as he had hoped to contribute more frequently to both ventures.

“I wanted to work more than once a year, and it was crucial for me to find a balance between ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Horizon,'” Costner said. “However, deadlines and busy schedules made it tough. I’d love to return to ‘Yellowstone’ if the story aligns with my vision.”

The actor shared that he shot the first chapter of “Horizon” in just 52 days, compared to the 106 days it took to complete his acclaimed 1990 film “Dances with Wolves,” underscoring the intensity of his commitment to both projects.

Costner also addressed rumors of an alleged feud with “Yellowstone” co-creator Taylor Sheridan, stating that any such speculation is unfounded. Reflecting on their early collaborations, he expressed continued respect and affection for Sheridan.

“I have nothing but love for the show and for Taylor,” Costner told King. “If the story were right, I’d be eager to return. My commitment to the show and its creators remains strong.”

Despite his departure, Costner is not closing the door on a return to “Yellowstone.” He expressed openness to the idea, contingent on finding compelling writing and a role that reignites his passion.

“I’ve never missed any professional commitment in my career,” Costner said. “The possibility of returning is open. It depends on whether I can fall in love with the writing and the role again.”

Fans have reacted strongly to the news, with many expressing their disbelief at the prospect of “Yellowstone” without Costner’s portrayal of John Dutton. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Costner acknowledged the impact of the character and his gratitude for the support from fans.

“Playing John Dutton has been transformative for me,” Costner wrote. “I’ve deeply valued our connection, and although I won’t be returning, I’ll see you at the movies.”

The first chapter of “Horizon: An American Saga” is set to premiere in theaters on June 28, with subsequent chapters to follow.
