“A Deep Dive into Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’: Everything We Know So Far”

Fans of the Western drama Yellowstone are still reeling from the news that the series is coming to an end—partly due to the departure of star Kevin Costner. While we’re eagerly awaiting the fate of John Dutton, those craving more of Costner’s work can now dive into the first installment of his new film franchise, Horizon: An American Saga.

The first film in the Horizon series premiered on June 28, 2024, and is currently available for streaming. The release of the second film, originally scheduled for August, has been postponed. A New Line spokesperson explained that the delay is meant to give audiences more time to discover the first installment, both on PVOD and Max.

In a recent update, it was announced that the second film will have its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2024, where it will be shown out of competition. This screening will follow an earlier showing of Chapter One. At present, there is no clear information on when or if Chapter Two will hit theaters.

The Horizon saga’s trailer, released in February, provided a glimpse into Costner’s post-Dutton era and offered key insights into the films. On May 19, the film was showcased out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where Costner walked the red carpet with five of his children. His son Hayes not only appears in the film but is also named after Costner’s character.

The release schedule for the Horizon films has seen some changes. The first film was released as planned in June, with the second initially set for August 16, 2024. However, in early July, it was announced that the second film would be pulled from that date. The decision was made to allow more time for audiences to view the first film. A new premiere date for the second film has not yet been set, leading to refunds for advance ticket sales at many theaters.

Originally announced as a four-film series, Horizon was later rebranded as “a two-part theatrical event.” Costner, who also directs the project, has since begun production on the third film, emphasizing his intention to complete all four movies. He expressed his commitment to the saga, stating he plans to continue “as far as my money takes me.”

In April, Costner announced the Cannes screening, stating, “I’d like to thank the Festival de Cannes for including Horizon: An American Saga in this year’s selection. It’s been 20 years since I’ve had the pleasure of being on the Croisette. I’ve been waiting for the right time to return, and I’m proud to say that this time has come.” He added, “The story of Horizon began 35 years ago, and I can’t think of a better place than Cannes to reveal the result of such a wonderful adventure. The French have always supported films and believed deeply in filmmaking, just as I believe deeply in my film.”
