“Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ vs. ‘Civil War’: Which Will Attract More Viewers?”
Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 and the dystopian thriller Civil War are in a viewer showdown on Max.
After a disappointing theatrical run, Horizon premiered in theaters on June 28 before moving to digital streaming via premium video on demand (PVOD) on July 16. It made its debut on Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform, on August 23.
In contrast, Civil War found success in theaters after its April 12 release and transitioned to PVOD on May 24. It began streaming on Max on September 13, thanks to a distribution deal between indie studio A24 and Warner Bros. Discovery that allows Max to stream A24 releases first.
Both films are currently trending and attracting significant viewership. According to Max’s latest rankings, Civil War is the most-viewed film on the platform, followed closely by Horizon in second place. At number four is Tim Burton’s 1988 supernatural comedy classic Beetlejuice, likely boosted by the popularity of its long-awaited sequel, which has topped the box office since its September 6 release and has earned $187.7 million in North America to date.
Rounding out the top five most-viewed films on Max is the 2024 horror thriller The Watchers, which premiered on August 30. The list continues with the 2023 Best Animated Feature Oscar winner The Boy and the Heron at number six, followed by the 2016 sequel Independence Day: Resurgence at seven. At number eight is the upcoming Warner Bros. action thriller Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, with the 2016 Fox Marvel film X-Men: Apocalypse at nine, and DreamWorks’ animated hit Shrek Forever After taking the tenth spot.
