Tom Selleck Takes on a New Role: Author!

The iconic TV star, now 78, is set to release his memoir, You Never Know, on May 7, 2024, and PEOPLE has the exclusive first look at its cover.

In You Never Know, Selleck shares insights from his “remarkable life and thoroughly accidental career” in his signature straightforward style, according to a statement from Dey Street Books, an imprint of HarperCollins.

The memoir invites readers on Selleck’s unpredictable journey to success in Hollywood, detailing his temptations, missteps, and eventual triumphs. He reflects on his childhood in California, his college days as an athlete, and his rise to fame in his thirties and beyond, as he navigated the entertainment industry.

“From the basketball court at USC to unexpected opportunities, and ultimately embracing the work I love, it’s been a long, winding road filled with some successes, a few home runs, and plenty of setbacks,” says Selleck. “I think it’s time to share the ride.”

The book will also highlight Selleck’s friendships with numerous A-list celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Carol Burnett, and Sam Elliott, with a special focus on his mentor, James Garner, known for his role in The Rockford Files. Selleck emphasizes that, like Garner, he believes TV characters are more compelling with their imperfections.

Fans of Magnum, P.I. will be intrigued to learn how Selleck developed the character of Thomas Magnum as the beloved “imperfect hero” who resonated with audiences.

Filled with charm, wit, and humor, the memoir promises to showcase Selleck’s journey from his role as Dr. Richard Burke on Friends to his current portrayal of NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan in the hit CBS series Blue Bloods, now entering its 14th season.
