Kevin Costner Teases More to Come for John Dutton’s Story

Kevin Costner may be stepping away from his role as John Dutton, but he believes the story of the “Yellowstone” patriarch isn’t over just yet.

In a recent interview with ET ahead of the HISTORY Channel’s HISTORYTalks event, Costner shared a message for fans as they anticipate the return of the series without him. “Making ‘Yellowstone’ has been a wonderful part of my life,” he said. “Who knows? Some stories have a way of circling back. I haven’t seen that dust trail coming my way, but I’m always open to what I started. Five seasons was a lot, but I feel that story isn’t finished. We can continue the narrative with my children’s journey.”

While his statement is somewhat ambiguous, it appears to reference ongoing discussions about a potential sixth season for the Taylor Sheridan hit, which stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser. Reports indicate that while “deals are not finalized,” the showrunners are keen to keep the “Yellowstone” saga alive beyond the second half of season five, which will wrap up Costner’s character arc.

Paramount had initially decided to conclude the show with the final episodes of season five due to disagreements with Costner over shooting schedules. Sheridan has previously noted that Costner’s early exit will affect the closure of his character.

Although Costner has stated he won’t be returning to “Yellowstone,” anything is possible in the expansive Sheridanverse.

The second half of “Yellowstone” season five is set to return to Paramount on November 10.
