Tom Selleck Declares Matthew Perry the ‘Most Talented’ Member of the ‘Friends’ Cast
Tom Selleck recently reflected on his time working with Matthew Perry during the filming of Friends.
In an interview with USA Today, the 79-year-old actor shared how the late Perry often assisted him with line readings. Tom guest-starred on the beloved sitcom as Dr. Richard Burke, Monica’s older love interest.
He described a memorable scene where Richard attempted to connect with Chandler, played by Matthew, and Joey, portrayed by Matt LeBlanc, trying to relive his younger days. “We had this role reversal thing going, where [Richard] tried to be like them, and they tried to be like me,” Tom explained, praising Matthew’s ability to deliver his trademark sarcastic lines perfectly.
Tom recalled one particular line: “Could that shot be any prettier?” He noted that Matthew had a unique speech pattern that he had not recognized before. “He said to me, ‘It’s a joke, Tom. It’s the way he says it,’” Tom remembered. Throughout filming, he frequently asked Matthew to repeat the line, which was quintessentially his style.
Expressing his admiration for Matthew’s “raw talent,” Tom said, “He’s gone now, so it’s easy to say this, but it’s true. I think he was the most talented of a very talented group of people.”
