“Luke Wilson’s Nerve-Wracking Moment with Sam Worthington on Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga”
Wrangling a horse alongside Hollywood’s biggest names is no easy feat—just ask Luke Wilson.
The 52-year-old actor embraced the challenge in Kevin Costner’s new Wild West epic, Horizon: An American Saga. As showcased in the video above, he shares this newfound skill with his Aussie co-star, Sam Worthington.
Now streaming exclusively on Stan, Horizon: An American Saga features Wilson and Worthington as frontiersmen during the Civil War era. Wilson plays wagon train captain Matthew Van Weyden, while Worthington takes on the role of Lieutenant Trent Gephart.
Reflecting on their pre-filming experience, Wilson admitted, “We’d both been around horses a bit, but it’s nerve-wracking to hit your mark. Coming galloping into a scene and landing in the right spot is something you often take for granted. In a Western, you really have to figure it out.”
Filming in the Wild West under Costner’s direction was a “dream come true” for Wilson. “I’m from Texas, but from the suburbs,” he shared. “I grew up with friends who had ranches, so a few times a year, I’d ride horseback at rural locations. We had no formal training, so it was interesting to work with real cowboys.”
And real horses too! “The horses are big, smart, and fast—one of my favorite aspects of filming,” he said. “I had a great horse named Charm, and I think Sam enjoyed it as well.”
Although their characters don’t interact in the film, Wilson appreciated his time with Worthington off-screen. “Sam is such a hardworking, focused guy,” he remarked. “Sienna Miller was also wonderful to be around. It really was a fantastic ensemble cast.”
Spanning the four years of the Civil War from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious project delves into the allure and tumult of the Old West, showcasing the sacrifices made along the way. Joining Wilson and Worthington are an impressive cast, including Sienna Miller, Giovanni Ribisi, Will Patton, and Jena Malone.
Wilson noted, “The fun part was seeing all these familiar faces from Kevin’s cinematic history, not just actors but crew members too.”
