Whoopi Goldberg Pleads for Understanding After Tom Selleck Responds to Her Aldean Comments
On August 12, 2023, a celebrity news YouTube channel called Just In (@JustInCeleb) released a video claiming that Whoopi Goldberg said, “I don’t deserve this!” after actor Tom Selleck made remarks regarding her comments on Jason Aldean’s music video, “Try That in a Small Town.” The video was titled “3 MINUTES AGO: Whoopi Goldberg BEGS FOR MERCY As Tom Selleck DESTROYS Her.”
By August 14, the video and several reactions had garnered over a million views, a number likely to increase in the coming days.
However, the video’s main assertion about Goldberg’s reaction to Selleck was completely false. Selleck had not made any public comments about Goldberg or expressed support for Aldean. Furthermore, Goldberg never uttered the phrase “I don’t deserve this!” as claimed in the video’s thumbnail. The rumor that Selleck supported Aldean originated from a satirical website called The Dunning-Kruger Times, part of the America’s Last Line of Defense network.
In essence, many commenters who believed the video’s claims were misled by a satirical piece that was twisted into a sensational story. Notably, Goldberg’s name and image were added to the narrative by the creators of the video, as she was not mentioned in the original satire.
Additionally, early in the video, the AI-generated narrator claimed that Goldberg was involved in a lawsuit with Aldean. While she did discuss Aldean’s music video on “The View,” the assertion of a lawsuit stemmed from yet another satirical article on the same website.
