Kevin Costner Addresses ‘Yellowstone’ Turmoil: The Real Truth Behind the Delay
For over a year, Kevin Costner has been at the center of controversy regarding the future of “Yellowstone.” Now, the actor is shedding light on the “real truth” behind the behind-the-scenes drama that led to the show’s delays.
In a recent interview with Deadline, the 69-year-old, who plays John Dutton III, stated that he has “lived up” to his contract amid ongoing speculation and shared the events that contributed to the series’ challenges.
“There was no script,” Costner revealed, noting that he has yet to film the second half of season 5 (5B). “And then things imploded. You’ve been reading one version of the show’s issues for a year and a half.”
After the first half of the fifth season aired late last year, filming was initially scheduled to resume at the start of the new year but was postponed until this summer. No premiere date has been announced yet.
Multiple sources had claimed that Costner only wanted to work for one week to film the remaining episodes, which posed a challenge since he is the show’s lead.
“I left my movie, ‘Horizon,’ to be available for them for 5B,” Costner explained. “I did exactly what they asked, but it made things difficult for me. It turns out they didn’t have the scripts for 5B. They needed four more days to finish the first eight episodes. I left early to help them complete those eight, and I felt bad that the audience didn’t get 10. They didn’t have the scripts for anything beyond that.”
He added, “So what got reported was that I said, ‘Look, I’m doing my movie. If you want me to work a week because you want to finish this, I can do that.’ I didn’t really have that week to spare, but I offered. And then they twisted that into me only wanting to work a week.”
“Do you think that’s who I am? I’ve never missed a day of work. I’ve always fulfilled my contractual obligations. Often, I stay as long as I can,” he concluded.
