“‘Blue Bloods’ Showrunner Reveals How Show’s Shocking Cancellation Created a ‘Hole’ in CBS Lineup”

Kevin Wade, the showrunner of Blue Bloods, recently discussed the end of the beloved series, admitting that its conclusion was a surprise, especially since it left “a hole” in CBS’ Friday night lineup.

Wade appeared on CBS’ Book Club segment on January 27 to promote his new book, Johnny Careless, which follows a former NYPD detective who becomes a police chief on Long Island. He mentioned that writing Blue Bloods had helped him develop the necessary insights to tell an authentic police story. “I had access to the best police minds in the metro area,” Wade shared about the process of writing the book.

While promoting his new project, Wade also acknowledged that many Blue Bloods fans still hope for another season, though CBS had other plans. “There does seem to be a hole at 10:00 on Friday nights that I’m sure they’ll fill eventually, but the show went out in the world, and a lot of love came back after 14 years,” Wade said. He also revealed that he’s working on a sequel to Johnny Careless, but didn’t mention any spinoff ideas for Blue Bloods at this time.

Meanwhile, sources recently told Closer that Blue Bloods star Tom Selleck is open to a spinoff, specifically one centered on his character, Frank Reagan. An insider shared on January 27 that Selleck “already misses the cast and crew” of the show and would “definitely” be interested in a spinoff or TV movie. This is something Selleck has discussed publicly since Blue Bloods wrapped up after 14 seasons. However, while he was pitched a spinoff idea about Frank retiring and moving away from New York City, Selleck declined, choosing instead to focus on another project. “I said, ‘That’s really good, but I’m going to do another Jesse Stone movie. I’m going to write that,’” Selleck told in December 2024.

When asked about a potential spinoff in his recent interview, Selleck reflected on the decision to end Blue Bloods, expressing uncertainty about why CBS canceled the show in the first place. “I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year,” he said. “But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.”
