You Won’t Believe Kevin Costner’s Real Estate Portfolio

It’s safe to say that someone who has won two Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, and an Emmy would have a seriously impressive real estate portfolio. That description fits Kevin Costner perfectly—an actor famous for playing rugged, grounded characters, including his iconic role as Montana homesteader John Dutton III on the hit show Yellowstone.

Though Costner doesn’t appear in the latest season of Yellowstone, the influence of his character still looms large throughout the episodes. For fans missing his trademark cowboy hats and tailored suits, the next best thing is exploring Costner’s real-life property holdings. Are there ranches? Absolutely. It seems Costner’s taste in real estate mirrors his Yellowstone persona quite closely. Let’s take a closer look!

Carpinteria Compound
Kevin Costner’s Carpinteria, California, compound sits on 1.4 acres of prime cliffside land with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and private beach access. He purchased the main property back in 1988, about ten years after marrying his first wife, Cindy Silva. The estate includes a main house and two guest houses—though interior photos remain private, the ocean vistas are undoubtedly spectacular.

The guest homes made headlines during Costner’s recent divorce, when his second wife, Christine Baumgartner, was ordered to leave the main house but moved into one of the smaller guest homes temporarily. In 2006, Costner expanded his Carpinteria holdings by snapping up an additional 17.25-acre parcel nearby for $28.5 million—seven acres of which he sold a year later. This land included a modest house, and although he never built the planned pool and guesthouse, he did transform the polo field into a baseball diamond.

In 2017, Costner listed 2825 Padaro Lane, the newest addition to the compound, for a whopping $60 million. However, the property didn’t sell and remains his home. Interestingly, in 2023, Costner revealed he mortgaged this property to help finance his latest film project, Horizon: An American Saga. The entire Carpinteria estate is valued around $145 million.

La Cañada Flintridge Home
Back in 1989, while still married to Silva, Costner commissioned a home near the Angeles National Forest in La Cañada Flintridge, designed in the style of an Italian palazzo. The villa featured hand-painted fresco ceilings, Venetian plaster, Murano glass windows, an elegant loggia, and breathtaking garden and pool views.

This home also boasted a dedicated connoisseur’s retreat with a 1,000-bottle wine cellar and a downstairs game/tasting room. After living there for about a decade, Costner sold the property in 1999 for $2.69 million.

Spanish-Style Los Angeles Home
In 1995, a year after his split from Silva, Costner purchased a sprawling hacienda-style estate in Los Angeles’s Westside area for nearly $3 million. The home spans about 9,000 square feet and includes five bedrooms, staff quarters, a pool, gym, and a library.

Costner sold this estate to TV personality Ryan Seacrest in 2006 for $11.5 million. Seacrest later renovated and expanded the home to his tastes. Costner was often photographed in the backyard, pictured here in 2002 with his three dogs.

Dunbar Ranch in Colorado
True to his Yellowstone roots, Costner owns a stunning 160-acre ranch in Colorado’s Elk Mountain Range near Aspen, purchased in 2000. Named Dunbar Ranch after his character in Dancing with Wolves, the property features three residences with a combined 12 bedrooms and eight bathrooms, totaling about 6,000 square feet.

The ranch is available for rent when Costner isn’t using it—typically during winter—and comes with an array of luxury amenities. Guests can kayak, canoe, paddleboard, and fish on the private lake or enjoy à la carte services like ski instruction, massages, and private Pilates sessions. The property also offers a baseball field, a treehouse, dog sledding, and more.

Though it’s undeniably luxurious, the ranch retains that down-to-earth charm—just with a hefty price tag of $36,000 per night to experience it.
