Kevin Costner Reacts to His 2024 Western’s Global Netflix Success: “It’s Outperforming the Year’s Biggest Films”

Kevin Costner Responds to Surprise Streaming Success of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1

Six months after its theatrical release, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 has found new life as a streaming hit. Co-written, directed by, and starring Kevin Costner, the Western epic didn’t meet expectations at the box office, grossing only $38.7 million against a $100 million budget. But the film’s debut on Netflix has changed the conversation entirely.

Horizon recently landed on Netflix’s Top 10 during its first week, signaling a major comeback for the first part of Costner’s ambitious four-part saga. Reacting to the film’s late success, Costner acknowledged the growing interest in Westerns and what sets Horizon apart from others in the genre.

“I think it’s interesting that the movie came out six months ago and people are still finding it with little push from anywhere,” Costner said. “It’s out there. It’s standing amongst the biggest movies of the year and it was streamed more than them. It tells me that people want to go places in their heart and their mind.”

He also emphasized the unique focus Horizon brings to the genre, particularly in its portrayal of women during the settling of the American West.

“This American Western specifically has women in it. When we started writing it, women kept dominating my storyline. You have no West without women. But they were often dragged out there against their will, and they just had to live in the fear and the dirt and everything, trying to keep their families clean.”

What This Means for the Future of Horizon

Originally intended to be followed by Chapter 2 in late 2024, the sequel’s release was canceled following Chapter 1’s poor box office performance. However, the recent streaming success may be turning the tide. While Warner Bros. has not committed to a wide theatrical release, Chapter 2 has already screened at the Venice and Santa Barbara International Film Festivals. A streaming release in 2025 is now a likely scenario.

Though Chapter 1 received mixed critical reviews—with a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes—it has resonated with general audiences, as reflected by its 70% audience score. Its deliberate pace and nostalgic tone have struck a chord with Western enthusiasts, even if it doesn’t quite match the modern flair of Yellowstone or the spectacle of blockbusters like Wicked.

A Western for True Fans

Costner, known for his deep connection to the Western genre, delivers a film more in line with classic Western storytelling, resembling Bonanza more than Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Westerns. That might explain its stronger performance on streaming platforms, where viewers can engage with the slower narrative at their own pace.

As Costner explained, Horizon is not just about the frontier—it’s about emotion, identity, and untold perspectives:

“It’s about a place people want to go in their hearts and minds.”

Looking Ahead

While Chapters 3 and 4 have yet to enter production, Horizon’s streaming revival could breathe new life into the series. If the momentum continues, there’s a real chance the rest of the saga could be released directly to streaming, avoiding the financial risks of theatrical distribution.

Costner’s passion for the project is evident, and now, with the film finally finding its audience, the future of Horizon seems far more hopeful than it did just months ago. For fans of sweeping Westerns and long-form storytelling, this may just be the beginning.
