Filming Update Revealed by Star of Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon: An American Saga’

Danny Huston Shares Promising Update on Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga

Danny Huston, who plays Colonel Albert Houghton in Kevin Costner’s ambitious Western saga Horizon: An American Saga, has provided a hopeful update on the future of the film series despite its early challenges.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 debuted in theaters on June 28, 2024, but underperformed at the box office. After five weeks in theaters, the film grossed just $29 million domestically and $9.7 million internationally, totaling $38.7 million worldwide against a reported $100 million production budget. Costner personally invested $38 million into the project, with additional backing from two unnamed investors, according to Variety.

Following the film’s disappointing box office run, the release of Chapter 2—originally scheduled for August 16, 2024—was postponed by Costner’s Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Despite the delay, Costner completed the sequel and premiered it at the Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2024. A U.S. premiere followed at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 7.

While Chapter 2 has no new release date, Huston recently offered encouraging news in an interview with Screen Rant, revealing that filming on Chapter 3 is largely finished.

“I think he’s got a lot of Chapter 3 in the can, actually,” Huston said. “But there’s no stopping him. He’s just unbelievable, and this dream of his is coming to life in a spectacular way. It’s just extraordinary what he does.”

Costner Still Committed to Vision for Four-Part Epic

Despite financial hurdles and release delays, Costner remains committed to completing his four-part saga. Speaking at a Deadline Contenders event, he said:

“I’m hoping, I’m dreaming, I’m meeting all the billionaires that we all hear about — they’re all hiding in the shadows. I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to make [Chapter 3], and then I’m going to make the fourth one. And if you want to say ‘the end’ at that point, then that’s the end.”

Legal Troubles Continue Behind the Scenes

In addition to box office and financing challenges, the Horizon production has faced legal complications. In May, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Costner’s loan-out company Horizon Series, New Line Cinema, and City National Bank were embroiled in a legal dispute.

More recently, a stunt double filed a lawsuit against the production, alleging sexual harassment, a hostile work environment, and emotional distress related to an alleged unscripted and non-consensual scene filmed in Utah in May 2023.

Costner’s attorney Marty Singer has denied the claims, stating:

“Ms. LaBella was doing a rehearsal on an insert shot for a scripted scene. There was no intimacy or anything sexual in the shot… Numerous witnesses have contradicted Ms. LaBella’s meritless claims.”

The outcome of the legal proceedings remains pending.

What’s Next for Horizon: An American Saga?

As of now, there is no confirmed release date for Horizon: Chapter 2, but Costner appears undeterred. With much of Chapter 3 reportedly completed and a fourth installment still in development, Costner continues to push forward with what he has described as his dream project.
