Kevin Costner Praises Liz Cheney: ‘She Deserves Our Support and Protection’

Actor Kevin Costner defended former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney on Monday, praising her public service and urging people to support her despite political backlash.

“I expect people in government to do the right thing. Public service is about serving the public, not about your career or ego. Your four years is your four years,” Costner said.

Cheney faced intense criticism from former President Donald Trump, especially in the days leading up to the 2022 midterm elections. Trump labeled her a “war hawk” and challenged her toughness by saying, “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. Let’s see how she feels about it.”

As one of Trump’s most vocal critics, Cheney campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris and condemned Trump following the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack.

Costner endorsed Cheney during the 2022 midterms, sharing a photo of himself wearing a T-shirt that read, “I’m for Liz Cheney.”

“I’m very proud of Liz Cheney,” Costner said. “She is someone who stood up for what she believes in, even when it put her at odds with powerful forces. We should applaud her. We should protect her. This woman should never be threatened.”

Cheney ultimately lost her GOP primary re-election bid to Harriet Hageman, a candidate backed by Trump.
