“Yellowstone Star Luke Grimes Teases Spinoff Return of ‘Familiar Faces’ Amid Kevin Costner Drama”
Luke Grimes Hints at Return of Yellowstone Co-Stars in Spinoff ‘Y: Marshals’ Amid Kevin Costner Fallout
Luke Grimes is giving Yellowstone fans a reason to get excited about the franchise’s future. While promoting his new A24 film Eddington, the 41-year-old actor revealed that fans can expect to see some familiar faces in his upcoming Yellowstone spinoff Y: Marshals.
Grimes, who portrayed Kayce Dutton throughout all five seasons of the hit Paramount Network series, will reprise his role in Y: Marshals, which recently received a straight-to-series order from CBS. The show is set to debut in midseason 2026 as part of the network’s Sunday night lineup.
Set in the aftermath of Yellowstone‘s explosive final season, Y: Marshals will follow Kayce as he joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. The series will explore how he blends his cowboy roots and Navy SEAL training to bring justice to Montana, while also navigating the personal cost of balancing family and duty on the violent frontier.
Though no additional cast members have been officially announced, Grimes teased during the interview with TooFab:
“You will see some familiar faces. I’m excited to do it. It’s going to be year eight for me, playing the same character, which is… who would have thought that I would ever play a character for eight years?”
He added, “He’s really close to my heart. He feels like a family member, and it would be weird to fully let him go anyway, so I’m glad we get to reconnect.”
Given the conclusion of Yellowstone, it’s likely the spinoff will feature Kayce’s wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and their son Tate (Brecken Merrill), who were central to his character arc. In the series finale, Kayce orchestrated a plan to save the Dutton ranch by selling it back to the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, preserving a piece of land for his own family while allowing his sister Beth (Kelly Reilly) and her husband Rip (Cole Hauser) to settle nearby — opening the door for their possible return as well.
As for the rest of the Yellowstone cast, many of the ranch hands from the famous bunkhouse storyline went their separate ways, but some could potentially return in future episodes of Y: Marshals.
The series will air Sundays at 9 PM on CBS, following 60 Minutes and Tracker, and leading into Watson at 10 PM. Production details and casting announcements are still under wraps.
Y: Marshals isn’t the only Yellowstone spinoff in the works. CBS is also developing The Madison, which follows a wealthy New York City family who relocates to a Montana ranch. That series will star Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, Patrick J. Adams, Beau Garrett, Elle Chapman, and Amiah Miller.
Grimes became a household name through his role as Kayce Dutton, the son of Kevin Costner’s character, patriarch John Dutton. Costner’s abrupt exit from the franchise during Season 5 stirred controversy, with rumors of behind-the-scenes conflict with series creator Taylor Sheridan.
Although Costner cited scheduling conflicts with his own Western project Horizon as the reason for his departure, speculation of creative disagreements lingered. Grimes later addressed the shift, telling Men’s Health:
“Hopefully everyone can see that it was time,” he said of John Dutton being written off. “To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone… it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.”
Despite fan speculation, Grimes denied any personal animosity. “It’s not a case of any hard feelings,” he said. “He’s Kevin Costner. He’s a big deal. I do have his phone number — I just don’t feel like it’s my place to reach out. He can reach out to me if he wants.”
Costner filmed only the first half of Season 5 before exiting, with his character ultimately written out through a murder-for-hire plot. Meanwhile, his passion project Horizon, into which he invested over $38 million of his own money, underperformed at the box office despite decades of effort.
As Y: Marshals prepares to continue the Dutton family legacy, fans eagerly await more details — and the return of some of the faces that made Yellowstone a TV phenomenon.
