Kevin Costner & Gene Hackman’s 92% Fresh Neo-Noir Thriller Finds a New Streaming Home
As Hollywood continues to mourn the passing of legendary actor Gene Hackman, one of his most acclaimed films has found a new streaming home, giving fans a chance to revisit his unforgettable performances. The neo-noir thriller No Way Out, starring Hackman alongside fellow Oscar winner Kevin Costner, is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
Adapted from Kenneth Fearing’s 1946 novel The Big Clock, No Way Out features Costner as U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Farrell. The plot thickens when Tom becomes romantically involved with Susan Atwell (Sean Young), only to discover that his superior, Defense Secretary David Brice (Hackman), has a complicated past with her. When Susan is found murdered, Tom is tasked with investigating the crime—only to find himself under suspicion as new revelations about his relationship with Susan come to light.
The film also stars Will Patton as Scott Pritchard and model-turned-actress Iman as Nina Beka. No Way Out received widespread critical acclaim, cementing Costner’s status as a leading man, while Hackman and Young also garnered praise for their compelling performances. Released by Orion Pictures, the film holds an impressive 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a perfect score from the late critic Roger Ebert. It performed well at the box office, grossing $35.5 million worldwide against a $15 million budget.
Following Hackman’s death in late February at age 95, the film community has celebrated his remarkable career. Hackman was found deceased alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog at their New Mexico home, with authorities investigating the circumstances. Widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s finest actors, Hackman won two Academy Awards: Best Actor for The French Connection and Best Supporting Actor for Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven. His extensive filmography includes iconic roles in Bonnie and Clyde, Mississippi Burning, Enemy of the State, and The Royal Tenenbaums. At the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, Hackman was honored in the In Memoriam segment, led by Morgan Freeman.
Meanwhile, Kevin Costner achieved Oscar success three years after No Way Out, winning Best Director for Dances With Wolves, which is now streaming on Peacock. Recently, Costner starred in the four-part Western drama Horizon: An American Saga, with the first chapter streaming successfully and the second premiering at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival earlier this year, ahead of an anticipated theatrical release.
