Kevin Costner Sends a Strong Message to Hollywood About Making Movies for Viewers

Kevin Costner recently explained that Hollywood movies are separate from politics. The Yellowstone star believes that the industry didn’t need to change with the Trump administration and that filmmakers should focus on creating movies for viewers above all.

“I think you make the best movie you can for an audience and understand that…you have a chance,” the 71-year-old said. “Every so often, you have a chance to do something meaningful.”

Costner emphasized that movies don’t always have to be important—they just need to be made with an audience in mind and can simply be for fun. “I think it doesn’t matter about the party in office,” he added. “It’s about the people sitting in the dark. It’s got nothing to do with politics.”

Earlier in June, the actor reportedly left his hit show Yellowstone due to scheduling and contract issues that were preventing him from focusing on his four-part Civil War drama, Horizon: An American Saga, which he both starred in and directed.

Discussing the American Saga: Chapter 1 box office performance, Costner admitted, “I’ve faced life with people being dismissive of me. But they can’t be dismissive of Horizon, because now it’s out of their hands.”

He added, “They might point to the finish line—well, this is what it did at the box office—but I know this movie is going to play for the next 50 years.”

“It’s not just a Western,” Costner continued, “it’s a history of migration and what people had to do to survive. And I’m really proud of it.”
