After a Major Flop, Kevin Costner Takes Bold New Direction Post-Yellowstone
Kevin Costner Lands Major Role in New Dramedy Following Horizon Box Office Disappointment
After the underwhelming performance of Horizon: An American Saga at the box office, Kevin Costner is making a notable return to the screen with a role in the upcoming comedy-drama Honeymoon With Harry for Amazon MGM Studios.
This marks one of Costner’s first major acting projects since stepping away from his iconic role as John Dutton in the hit Paramount Network series Yellowstone. He left the Taylor Sheridan-created show midway through its fifth season to focus on Horizon, his passion project — a four-part Western epic that struggled to gain traction with audiences. The first installment opened to mixed reviews and earned just $11 million in its debut weekend, despite a reported $100 million budget.
Speaking candidly about Horizon, Costner admitted, “It didn’t have overwhelming success.”
Now, he’s pivoting toward a more character-driven story. In Honeymoon With Harry, Costner will star alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in a film adapted from Bart Baker’s novel. The screenplay comes from Dan Fogelman, the creator of NBC’s This Is Us, and will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa — the duo behind Crazy, Stupid, Love, Focus, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
According to Deadline, the film follows a man (Gyllenhaal) who decides to go on his honeymoon with his would-be father-in-law (Costner) after his fiancée tragically dies just two days before their wedding.
While Honeymoon With Harry is one of the few acting roles Costner has taken on recently, his focus remains largely on completing the remaining chapters of Horizon. The second installment has already screened at the Venice and Santa Barbara film festivals but has yet to secure a wide theatrical release. Parts three and four are still in various stages of production and development.
Beyond Horizon, Costner is also involved in The Gray House, a Civil War-era spy thriller he co-produced through his company, Territory Pictures. In addition, he will star in and co-write Headhunters, a surfing thriller featuring Chloe East and Daniel Zovatto, directed by Steven Holleran.
