“After Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck’s Next Character Choice is Revealed”

I’m struggling with the reality that Blue Bloods will eventually come to an end, and unfortunately, that day seems to be approaching sooner rather than later. CBS has confirmed that the show won’t be revived like S.W.A.T., despite Tom Selleck’s efforts to save it. Although there are more episodes on the way, Selleck is already considering what’s next for his career and which character he might bring back once the Reagan family drama wraps up.

In a recent interview promoting his book, Selleck was asked about his future plans. While he remains optimistic that CBS might reverse its decision (he expressed hope that “CBS will come to their senses”), he’s also thinking ahead to the possibility of returning to his role as Jesse Stone. Yes, mystery fans, Selleck is eager to dive back into that character.

Selleck mentioned, “If Blue Bloods doesn’t [get revived], there is room for a Jesse Stone because I’ve written them, as you know. I love Jesse. And he’d be different. He’s older. It’s been a while since the last one. That’s a fun thing to deal with. Either way, I want to work. But we’re in the middle of Blue Bloods; I’m shooting right now.”

For those who might not be familiar, the Jesse Stone TV movie series aired from 2005 to 2015, so it’s been nearly a decade since we last saw a new installment. Selleck, who also wrote some of the original movies, hints that he might have more stories to tell. While Hallmark and Lifetime have become prominent in the TV movie arena, the Jesse Stone films, based on Robert B. Parker’s novels, are solid examples of engaging murder mysteries. They offer a delightful viewing experience akin to Poirot or Hallmark’s Aurora Teagarden mysteries. Seeing Stone return as he approaches 80 could be intriguing—imagine him still being the charismatic ladies’ man.

Reports, including Selleck’s own statements, suggest that he wants to continue working after Blue Bloods. With a reported salary of around $200,000 per episode, much of which goes toward maintaining his avocado ranch, Selleck is motivated to keep his career going.

The reasons behind Blue Bloods ending are somewhat unclear. Initially, it seemed budget cuts might have played a role, but more recent reports suggest it’s more about CBS clearing space for new shows like NCIS spinoffs and Kathy Bates’ Matlock revival. Regardless of the exact reasons, Selleck has pointed out that Blue Bloods has performed well in the ratings, even in its 14th season. Its cancellation in 2024 has been one of the bigger surprises of the year.
