After the issues with “Horizon 1,” will Kevin Costner still helm “Horizon 3”?

Kevin Costner, the acclaimed Hollywood actor and director, has confirmed his intention to helm the third installment of the “Horizon” franchise. This announcement was made during his recent appearance at the Venice Film Festival.

Despite the first film’s unfavorable reviews and disappointing box office performance, Costner remains dedicated to the success of the series. He attributed the underperformance of the initial film to Warner Bros.’ erratic release schedule for the sequel. Costner explained, “The reaction to the first film was likely influenced by the studio’s decision to release it six weeks later than planned. It was a studio situation where the timing was off.”

Costner’s optimism for the “Horizon” franchise’s future remains high. Drawing from his extensive career in the film industry, he believes that even films that start out poorly can ultimately achieve classic status. “I’ve had many movies that have stood the test of time,” he noted.

The first “Horizon” film, which debuted in June 2024, earned around $34 million—considered below average. Nonetheless, Costner is determined to ensure that “Horizon 3” succeeds. He emphasized his commitment to the project, saying, “I need to act quickly and prevent the momentum from waning. I have to get involved and push it forward.”

Costner also conveyed his eagerness to direct “Horizon 3,” describing it as a crucial effort. “It’s a challenge I can’t abandon. I’m not sure how I’ll bring ‘Horizon 3’ to fruition just yet, but I’m committed to making it happen.”

As of now, the release details for “Horizon 2” have not been announced. The first installment featured Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Will Patton, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Giovanni Ribisi, set in the 1850s San Pedro Valley of Southeastern Territorial Arizona. The future of the trilogy remains a passion project for Costner.
