“Blue Bloods: Alternate Realities – Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, and More Rewrite Their Characters’ Fates”

After 14 seasons, Blue Bloods is drawing to a close — and the cast has some thoughts on how their characters deserve to be sent off.

In anticipation of Friday’s series finale, Entertainment Weekly asked the actors behind the Reagan family (and the rest of the Blue Bloods cast) to come up with their own alternate endings for their characters.

We received a wide array of responses, ranging from playful to heartfelt — but all of them were entirely envisioned by the actors themselves. Our only rule: the proposed alternate endings can’t be exactly the same as the one that actually occurs in the finale (so you could call these spoilers by process of elimination — once you read each response, you’ll know that the characters won’t experience these particular fates). Read on to see how the Blue Bloods cast would like to send off their characters.

Tom Selleck (Frank Reagan)
“I thought about that. I didn’t really have input in where the show was going for the final episode. But in my alternate ending, Frank Reagan remains a man alone, someone who never truly wanted the job he had, yet has a deep sense of responsibility. I imagine he’d be commissioner until he drops.”

Donnie Wahlberg (Danny Reagan)
“Well, I’d love Danny to just walk right into the next episode of Blue Bloods and we continue for another 14 seasons. But realistically, I’d have Danny step into the next chapter of his life. Maybe he moves to a different place, does a similar job, and perhaps with someone from the current cast. I’d want him to remain close enough to his family so that he could still spend time with them, but it would be interesting to see him navigate life after the kids have grown up and his wife has passed. Perhaps exploring what the future holds for him on his own… Is this a tease for a spinoff? Maybe!”

Len Cariou (Henry Reagan)
“Frank had promised me I would eventually get to the Vatican to meet the Pope. My alternate ending would be to fulfill that promise.”

Vanessa Ray (Eddie Janko)
Blue Bloods: Boca — Eddie and Jamie decide they’ve had enough of the harsh NYC winters and the uncomfortable uniforms. So, they relocate to Boca Raton, Florida (with the family’s blessing, of course — it’s only a three-hour flight back to New York!). Eddie gets promoted to detective and also performs in her one-woman show, ‘You Have the Tight to Remain Fabulous: A Cop Cabaret.'”

Marisa Ramirez (Maria Baez)
“There are so many fun endings to consider! Maybe Baez decides she wants to be a guidance counselor at a school in California, but it turns out to be a school of misfits, and she needs Danny’s help. Or perhaps Danny, Baez, Jamie, and Eddie go on an island vacation and get into trouble, deciding to stay there for a while. There are endless ways to spin this series into a new adventure while still keeping it connected to the original show.”

Abigail Hawk (Abigail Baker)
“When Frank finally retires — on his own terms, of course — Baker becomes the youngest police commissioner and leads an era of unity and trust between the NYPD and the community. She becomes known for her wisdom and charisma, carrying forward the values Frank instilled in her, and goes on to lead the most diverse and forward-thinking department in NYPD history.”

Gregory Jbara (Garrett Moore)
“Thanks to decades of philanthropy, Garrett is invited to a VIP event at The Big House for a Michigan vs. Ohio State game. He’s joined by Sid Gormley, and together they cheer wildly as the Wolverines win their fifth straight game against the Buckeyes. But their exuberance, fueled by martinis and a few too many anchovy olives, sends them tumbling over the alumni box plexiglass rail, falling 40 feet into the seats below. Sid is pronounced dead at the scene, and Garrett, landing on top of him, is quoted with his last breath: ‘Go BLUE!…bloods.'”

Will Hochman (Joe Hill)
“Off-duty, at the bar, laughing with uncles Danny and Jamie about their wild adventures together, Joe finally feels like he belongs. He tilts back a shot and, with family support and a bit of liquid courage, decides to approach the mysterious woman who’s been glancing at him all night. Sparks fly instantly, but here’s the twist — she lives in California. And she came to New York specifically to recruit Joe for a secret assignment out west. She can’t say too much, and he mustn’t tell anyone, but it’s critical to national security that he takes on the job. Now, Joe, who’s finally found his place in the family, faces some tough decisions — and he’s left wondering what the future holds for him, both with her and with his family.”
