Chris Hemsworth’s Plea to Kevin Costner Goes Unanswered: Costner Opts to Star in New Film Himself
Chris Hemsworth recently shared with Entertainment Tonight that he made a strong pitch to land a role in a project directed by Kevin Costner, only to find out that Costner had decided to cast himself instead. While Hemsworth kept the details of the film under wraps, he described it as an “abstract and interesting” narrative centered on a man and a woman.
“There was a movie I read and loved, and I really wanted to be a part of it,” Hemsworth explained. “Then I heard, ‘Kevin Costner has that role,’ and I was like, ‘Goddamnit!’ I spent an hour trying to convince him, but he just said, ‘I’m doing it, kid.’ So, I didn’t get the part.” He also mentioned that the character is a “horse wrangler,” which piqued his interest, especially since he and his wife have a passion for horses. “We have 10 or 11 horses at home, and my wife loved the script, saying, ‘You’ve got to do this.’”
Costner addressed Hemsworth’s audition during his own interview with Entertainment Tonight, stating: “It’s a love story, and as long as I feel young enough to play the role, I will. Chris will have to wait his turn. He’s so handsome and talented, but he’ll have to find his own love story. I’m glad he likes this one. If there comes a time when I feel I can’t do it anymore, I’d definitely reach out to him. He’s one of our great leading men right now.”
Given that the project is described as “abstract” and a “small story,” it’s unlikely to be related to Costner’s upcoming Western epic, “Horizon.” He has already filmed two installments in this series, with the first set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month. Warner Bros. will release the first film in theaters on June 28, followed by the second on August 16. If these films perform well at the box office, Costner plans to continue the franchise with two additional movies.
“Horizon” features Costner alongside an ensemble cast that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tantanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, and Jamie Campbell Bower.
