“Costner’s Financial Woes: ‘Yellowstone’ Star Hit with $100M Debt After Disappointing Box Office”
Kevin Costner is reportedly grappling with a daunting $100 million debt following the poor performance of his passion project, the Western film saga Horizon. Insiders reveal that he may be forced to liquidate valuable assets to manage this financial burden.
As previously reported by RadarOnline.com, the Yellowstone star, 69, took out a mortgage on his stunning 10-acre ranch in Santa Barbara to finance the ambitious four-part film. Unfortunately, the first installment only earned $11 million during its opening weekend, leading to the postponement of the second part originally slated for August. Sources indicate that Costner may need to sell some of his real estate holdings to stay afloat.
A source stated, “Kevin relied heavily on undeveloped California land he owns to fund Horizon. Now he’s facing the reality that he may need to part with this property to stay solvent after the disappointing reception of the first film.”
Adding to his challenges, Costner’s recent divorce from Christine Baumgartner, 50, his wife of 18 years and mother of three, significantly impacted his estimated $400 million fortune. The insider noted, “His divorce was costly. He’s paying Christine $63,000 in child support and still provides additional financial support for their kids. But this film investment has really put him in a bind. It’s like a heavy weight on his shoulders.”
Costner, who has acknowledged that he’s “not a very good businessman,” invested his own money in this project and is determined to see it through. The source added, “Despite the setbacks, there’s still some enthusiasm for the films, even if it’s mainly coming from Kevin himself. But he now realizes that he might have been better off making this a TV miniseries to avoid this predicament.”
In light of his financial situation, Costner is reworking his life and finances to fund Horizon for the next few years. “He’s navigating this crisis with a mix of hope and realism, knowing he may need to sell off some of his assets to keep moving forward,” the insider explained.
Additionally, Costner chose to walk away from his lucrative role in Yellowstone this year, citing scheduling conflicts and rumored tensions with creator Taylor Sheridan. This decision cost him his $1.3 million per episode salary and strained his relationships with his former castmates.
A source mentioned, “The cast used to admire him, but now there’s a sense of distancing, with many siding with Sheridan. They still exchange pleasantries, but Kevin isn’t getting the support he expected.”
The source also pointed out that Costner played a significant role in the rise of many of his co-stars, stating, “Kevin helped make them stars, and now it’s ironic that he’s not receiving the backing he once did.”
