“Donnie Wahlberg Reveals Tom Selleck’s Emotional Reaction to ‘Blue Bloods’ Finale: ‘Waterworks Turned On’”
Donnie Wahlberg Reflects on Emotional Farewell to “Blue Bloods” After 14 Seasons
As “Blue Bloods” prepares to conclude after 14 seasons, Donnie Wahlberg is ready to say an emotional goodbye to the beloved crime drama. With seven episodes remaining, the 55-year-old actor expressed his deep feelings about the series, which has featured notable stars like Tom Selleck, Will Estes, and Bridget Moynahan.
In a recent appearance on Sirius XM’s Andy Cohen Live, Wahlberg shared, “I felt tremendous gratitude, not sadness, but everyone cried. The last day was heartbreaking.” He described the mix of emotions he experienced, noting, “In one sense, the 14 years went by in the blink of an eye. In another sense, it’s been 14 years of my life… I didn’t even know my wife when the show started.”
Wahlberg, who is married to “The Masked Singer” judge Jenny McCarthy, reminisced about her visits to the set during the show’s third season. He highlighted the strong relationships he built with his co-stars, particularly with Selleck, 79. “We have real conversations. We work,” he explained. “It’s not just me saying, ‘Tell me what to do, Tom’… There’s a process, and he respects what I bring to the table as I do him.”
Emotionally, Wahlberg noted that Selleck was often seen supporting him on set, recalling, “He’s really tall, standing in the back corner watching with tears in his eyes. The waterworks turned on. I could literally cry just thinking about it.”
Wahlberg portrays NYPD Detective Danny Reagan, while Selleck plays his father, Commissioner Frank Reagan. Since its debut in 2010, “Blue Bloods” has captivated audiences. When discussing the series finale, Wahlberg promised viewers would “be happy,” mentioning that there would be many tears, particularly due to a poignant scene in the middle of the final episode.
“It feels like a finale, but a hopeful, forward-thinking finale,” he added. Wahlberg’s sentiments come after Selleck expressed his frustration about the show’s cancellation. “I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for ‘Blue Bloods’ but about it still being wildly successful,” Selleck told TV Insider. “My frustration is that the show was always taken for granted because it performed well from the start. It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out.”
