“Horizon Chapter 3 Receives Unexpected Filming Update from Lead Actor One Year After Production Halt on Kevin Costner’s Troubled Western Franchise”

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 3 Receives Encouraging Filming Update More Than a Year After Production Halt

Kevin Costner’s passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, is slowly but surely moving forward despite significant setbacks. The franchise, which aims to chronicle the settling of the American West across four chapters, launched last year with the first installment. However, after Chapter 1 underperformed at the box office, the release of Chapter 2 was postponed indefinitely.

Filming for Chapter 3 began in May 2024 but was soon halted, reportedly due to funding issues. Now, during the digital release of Consecration, Danny Huston, who stars as the villainous Col. Albert Houghton in the saga, revealed that a significant portion of Chapter 3 has already been filmed. Huston praised Costner’s dedication, sharing:

“No, no. I think he’s got a lot of Chapter 3 in the can, actually. But there’s no stopping him. He’s just unbelievable, and this dream of his is coming to life in a spectacular way. It’s just extraordinary what he does.”

What This Means for Kevin Costner’s Horizon Franchise

As of now, Chapter 2 still lacks an official release date. The sequel was initially set to hit theaters in August 2024, but the lukewarm box office performance of Chapter 1—which grossed only $38 million worldwide—prompted a delay to allow more time for audiences to catch up. Chapter 2 did premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, suggesting it will eventually be released to the public, though likely not soon.

The franchise has faced additional complications, including two lawsuits: one over an alleged unscripted sexual assault scene, and another concerning unpaid costume rental fees. Despite these challenges, Costner remains committed to completing the saga.

In November, Costner reiterated his determination to see all four films through, mentioning that he’s been “meeting all the billionaires” in hopes of securing funding for the remaining chapters. Huston’s recent comments imply that much of Chapter 3 is already filmed, which could improve the chances of obtaining the necessary financing to finish it.

Our Take on Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 3

Costner’s passion for this Western saga is clear, but passion alone may not be enough. Chapter 1 received mixed reviews from critics and a lukewarm response from audiences. Additionally, the Western genre currently struggles to draw large crowds to theaters, making the path forward even more challenging.

While Chapter 2 appears set for eventual release, it’s possible it could be the final installment if the franchise cannot overcome its financial and legal hurdles. Securing funding for Chapter 4 may prove even more difficult, given the obstacles faced so far.

Still, Danny Huston’s confidence in Costner’s vision and determination is a hopeful sign. If anyone can see this sprawling Western saga to the end, it’s Kevin Costner.
