“Horizon: The American Saga Begins – Chapter 1”

NEW YORK – Kevin Costner both directs and stars in “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” the first chapter of a planned tetralogy. The film, set in the 1850s and 60s, features Costner as Hayes Ellison, a horse trader entangled in a custody battle involving a toddler and a prostitute named Marigold, played by Abbey Lee. Despite its stunning visuals, the narrative often feels cumbersome, and its exploration of period violence and mature themes makes it strictly adult-oriented.

The ensemble cast includes Sienna Miller as pioneer Frances Kittredge, Sam Worthington as Lt. Trent Gephardt, Luke Wilson as wagon train leader Matthew Van Weyden, and Owen Crow Shoe as the Apache warrior Pionsenay. The film tackles the tragic decline of Native American life with a sense of fatalism but struggles with focus and coherence, resulting in a somewhat disjointed story.

While “Horizon” succeeds in capturing the historical setting, its intense violence, sexual content, and mature themes make it unsuitable for younger audiences. The film is available for streaming on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Google Play, and YouTube. It carries an R rating due to its graphic content and adult themes.
