How Blue Bloods Balances Tom Selleck’s Ranch Life with Filming
Blue Bloods has earned its place as one of the longest-running scripted series in primetime, but CBS has officially announced that Season 14 will be its final season, despite Tom Selleck’s desire for more episodes and the optimistic remarks from other cast members. While Selleck might be disappointed to hang up Frank Reagan’s badge, he’s deeply appreciative of his years in a role he cherished. Producers have shown great consideration for Selleck’s love of his California ranch, allowing him to balance his dual passions.
In addition to his role on Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck is currently promoting his memoir, You Never Know, which was released on May 7. The memoir covers his extensive career in film and television, including iconic roles in Three Men and a Baby, Friends, and Magnum P.I. In an interview with Parade, Selleck discussed the 63-acre ranch he purchased thanks to his success, and how the Blue Bloods team accommodates his need to spend more time there. He explained:
“Sometimes you think you want something. After the Sacketts, I realized I wanted a ranch and horses. Sometimes you get that, and you realize it’s not quite what you imagined. But I was right; it’s perfect for me. The show compresses my work schedule in New York so I can be home for about 10 days at a time. It’s the ideal balance to the work I love. I enjoy working on Blue Bloods, but I also love being on the ranch.”
Selleck’s situation is a rare example of an actor receiving special consideration for time off, a stark contrast to the typical complaints of overwork in Hollywood. His reduced screen time on Blue Bloods compared to his co-stars can be attributed to this arrangement, highlighting his unique position within the show.
Despite the reduced filming schedule, Selleck has no plans to retire. He remains passionate about acting and has even expressed interest in revisiting his role as Jesse Stone once Blue Bloods wraps up. He’s intrigued by the concept of an older Jesse Stone, and fans are likely to be excited by this possibility.
While You Never Know touches briefly on his time with Blue Bloods, the memoir primarily focuses on earlier stages of his career. Selleck chose to conclude the book with significant life changes, reflecting more on the end of Magnum P.I. than on Blue Bloods. Nonetheless, those early days were crucial, and it’s worth noting that a potential alternate career path almost led Selleck to shave his iconic mustache.
