“How We Think ‘Blue Bloods’ Will End for Each Character: Our Theories”
The Blue Bloods series finale airs tonight, bringing an end to 14 seasons of gripping stories. Ahead of the big episode, the cast shared their own alternate endings for their characters, hinting at what won’t happen in the finale. Here, we offer our theories on what might unfold based on those insights.
The finale, titled “End of Tour,” promises high stakes for the Reagan family as they race to prevent chaos in New York City. The gangs have united to demand amnesty for their imprisoned members, and the Reagans must work together to put a stop to it. According to showrunner Kevin Wade, the finale will feature all the Reagans and their allies working on the same case, creating a fast-paced, action-packed conclusion. Wade explained, “In the first act, we see violent crimes and attempted murders, which seem unrelated at first, until Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan [Bridget Moynahan] and her investigator, Anthony [Steve Schirripa], are played a recording that reveals the crimes are part of a larger plot to create chaos. It becomes the Reagans’ job — Police Commissioner Frank [Tom Selleck], Detective Danny [Donnie Wahlberg], Sergeant Jamie [Will Estes], and Patrol Officer Eddie [Vanessa Ray] — along with Erin and Anthony, to figure it all out. Gang leader Carlo Ramirez [Manny Perez], who fled the country, plays a key role in the criminal scheme, returning with a thirst for vengeance and a mission to reclaim his child.”
Wade also teased that Frank will have a chance to return to his roots as a cop, after years in his commissioner role. While he didn’t promise a traditional “happy ending,” he hopes long-time fans will be satisfied with how it all wraps up.
With this in mind, here’s our take on what could happen to each character in the series finale:
Frank Reagan
Tom Selleck shared that in his alternate ending, Frank Reagan might continue his role as police commissioner until his final breath. “Frank remains a man alone, who never wanted the job he had but has an intense sense of responsibility. I think he’d be commissioner till he drops,” Selleck reflected. His comments suggest that Frank may not retire just yet, though he might consider the possibility of stepping back from the pressures of his role. It’s safe to say Frank will make it through the finale alive, as killing off the main character would be a bold move. However, the idea of Frank contemplating retirement or slowing down by the end could offer a bittersweet, reflective conclusion to his journey.
