Is Yellowstone Over After 1923 Season 2?
1923 Season 2 will be the final chapter in the Yellowstone prequel, but the saga of the Dutton family is far from finished. Premiering on February 23, 2025, 1923 Season 2 continues the story of Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) as they defend their Montana ranch from those looking to take it. Meanwhile, Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) races back from Africa to aid his family, despite being separated from his new wife, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer).
Yellowstone, the present-day neo-Western starring Kevin Costner as John Dutton III, became a cultural phenomenon during its five seasons on the Paramount Network. Its massive success paved the way for a Yellowstone franchise that delves into the history of the Dutton family, starting with the 1883 prequel, followed by 1923, which picks up the story 40 years later. Additionally, Yellowstone has inspired multiple spin-offs, including Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Landman, all under the guidance of creator Taylor Sheridan.
The End of 1923 Doesn’t Mean the End of Yellowstone
Though 1923 Season 2 will mark the conclusion of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren’s prequel, Taylor Sheridan originally designed 1923 to run for just two seasons, each with eight episodes. After the success of Season 1, Paramount+ renewed 1923 for its final season in February 2023, with Ford and Mirren returning to wrap up this chapter of the Dutton story. While 1923 Season 2 closes the book on this era of the Dutton family’s history, the broader Yellowstone saga will continue.
Why Yellowstone Ended With Season 5
The original Yellowstone series wrapped up with its Season 5 finale on December 15, 2024. The season was intended to be split into two parts, but production conflicts with lead actor Kevin Costner—who opted to focus on directing his Western film Horizon: An American Saga—meant that he would not return to film the second half. With Costner’s exit, Paramount and Sheridan made the decision to kill off his character, John Dutton, in the latter half of the final season, shifting focus to his children, Beth and Kayce Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly and Luke Grimes). Season 5’s finale effectively concludes the main Yellowstone series, but the story of the Duttons—and Taylor Sheridan’s empire—is far from over.
The Yellowstone Spinoffs and What’s Next
Even though the original Yellowstone series has ended, Sheridan’s growing universe of shows continues to expand. Paramount has already announced several spinoffs that will keep the Yellowstone story alive. A new series focusing on Beth and Rip Wheeler, which picks up after the events of Season 5, is currently in development. Additionally, The Madison, a present-day spinoff starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Fox about a New York couple relocating to Montana, is next in line. Another Dutton prequel, 1944, has also been greenlit, continuing the historical exploration of the Dutton family. Plus, Sheridan is working on a spinoff centered around the 6666 Ranch, featuring Jefferson White as Jimmy, who was a key character in Yellowstone.
So, while 1923 Season 2 will be the final chapter for this particular prequel, there is still plenty more Yellowstone on the horizon, with multiple spin-offs in the works to explore different corners of the vast Sheridan universe.
