“Kelly Reilly Discusses Kevin Costner’s Surprising Absence Before Yellowstone’s Series Finale”
Yellowstone Star Kelly Reilly Addresses Kevin Costner’s Surprising Exit from the Series
Kelly Reilly, known for her role in Yellowstone, has spoken out regarding Kevin Costner’s unexpected departure from the popular drama series, revealing that his absence was planned from the very beginning.
As fans eagerly await the final episodes of Yellowstone, the news of Costner not reprising his role as family patriarch John Dutton in Season 5 Part 2 has taken many by surprise. The concluding installment of the series is set to premiere on Monday, November 11, exclusively on Stan.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reilly clarified that John Dutton’s absence was part of the series’ original narrative arc. “The absence was part of the ending,” she stated. “It was something that was already woven into the fabric of the story. It was always meant to happen, just in a slightly different way.”
Reilly portrays Beth Dutton, John’s fiercely loyal daughter, and discussed how creator Taylor Sheridan had envisioned the series’ conclusion since Season 1. “In his mind, it was always going to be five seasons,” she explained. “But the show’s success led to everyone wanting more. So, in a way, fate took over, and we concluded this chapter of Yellowstone in the manner he always envisioned.”
Costner confirmed his exit from the beloved series in June 2024 through a post on his personal Instagram. “Hi, everyone. I wanted to reach out and let you know that after a long year and a half of working on Horizon and reflecting on Yellowstone, a series I hold dear and know you do too… I realized that I won’t be able to continue with Season 5 Part 2 or any future episodes,” he shared.
