Kevin Costner Aims to Shoot Chapters 3 and 4 of Horizon Back-to-Back in 2025
Kevin Costner’s ambitious passion project is still in play, despite some rocky moments. The first chapter of Horizon: An American Saga didn’t receive the warm reception he had hoped for this summer, and Warner Bros. recently pulled the scheduled release for Chapter 2. However, fans can look forward to its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival next month. Costner expressed his gratitude to the festival, stating, “My dream was always to show Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two at the Venice Film Festival. […] I’m indebted to [Venice Film Fest director] Alberto Barbera for his courage and leadership in committing to this cinematic journey. It is with gratitude and excitement that I return to the Venice Film Festival. Long live the movies and those willing to stand for them.”
While Chapter 2 will finally be showcased, Warner Bros.’ plans for its official release remain uncertain. Reports from World of Reel indicate that Costner is eager to continue filming Chapters 3 and 4, having already completed nine days of footage for Chapter 3 before production was halted due to funding issues. Costner shared with NBC his intentions to shoot Chapters 3 and 4 back-to-back in Spring 2025, saying, “I’ve already shot a bit of the third. The plan is to shoot them back to back next spring. […] It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I love this movie. I love the second one — and the third one’s even harder than the first two, while the fourth one completes the story.”
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 will soon be available on Max, and rental prices have dropped significantly; the original price on Prime Video has fallen from $19.99 to $5.99.
Despite being an epic setup for future chapters, the critical reception has been mixed, with a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audience scores are more favorable, sitting at 71%. In a review from Chris Bumbray, he noted, “Horizon feels like the appetizer before a main course, doing so much heavy lifting in terms of setup that you walk out feeling you’ve only had part of the experience. I believe this movie will fare better once more installments are out, but I found myself thoroughly engaged from start to finish. If part two were available right now, I would have walked right into the next film, eager for more of Costner’s epic saga.”
