“Kevin Costner Allegedly Seeks Financial Help After Horizon Setback”
Kevin Costner had high expectations for Horizon: An American Saga, but moviegoers didn’t quite share his enthusiasm. The film struggled at the box office, and the second installment of the planned four-part franchise never made it to theaters. Now, Costner is reportedly seeking financial help after pouring his own money into the project.
To give some context, Costner invested $38 million of his personal wealth to bring his passion project to life. In May 2024, he revealed the full extent of his commitment: “I know they say I’ve got $20 million of my own money in this movie. That’s not true. I’ve got now about $38 million in the film. That’s the truth. That’s the real number.”
Despite his optimism for the first part, released in June 2024, the film’s box office performance fell short, with only $11 million earned in its opening weekend. Things didn’t improve much after that, and the second part was never released in theaters. However, the film found a second chance on Netflix in December 2024, where it gained some traction, landing in the Top 10. This success has encouraged Costner to keep going with the remaining installments, but it seems he needs financial support to do so.
A source close to Costner shared that he’s hoping Netflix could step in to help. “Kevin and his team need it to perform because right now, Netflix is the only company with deep enough pockets to completely bail him out of the hole Kevin has dug for himself with these movies.” Costner is reportedly hoping to finish the saga within the next 18 months without having to cut corners.
The Horizon project has taken a toll on Costner both financially and personally. An insider revealed that the process has been “stressful” for him in multiple ways—physically, intellectually, and financially. Still, Costner is determined to see it through. In August, he explained why he’s pushing forward despite the setbacks:
“I made a promise to myself, I’m trying desperately to keep it and to bring it to people, these kind of giant stories, and I hope that people fall in love with these characters,” Costner said. “I love this movie. I love the second one—and the third one’s even harder than the first two, and the fourth one completes the story.”
Costner is hoping for a better 2025, and it seems Netflix may just be the lifeline that can save Horizon in the long run.
