Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal Star in Amazon’s Long-Awaited Comedy Honeymoon with Harry
Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal are set to star in Honeymoon with Harry, a dramedy that has been in development for over 20 years and has now landed at Amazon MGM. Costner, an Oscar winner for the 1990 Western epic Dances with Wolves and former star of Yellowstone, has recently focused on his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, a planned four-part Western series. Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal has become one of Amazon’s standout talents following his role in the 2024 Road House remake — one of the platform’s biggest hits — with a sequel scheduled to begin filming this fall. He also earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his performance in Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent.
The film will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the creative team behind Crazy, Stupid, Love, from a screenplay by Dan Fogelman. The story, adapted from an unpublished novel by Bart Baker, follows a man (played by Gyllenhaal) who embarks on a honeymoon trip with his would-be father-in-law (Costner) after the sudden death of his fiancée just two days before their wedding.
The Journey of Honeymoon with Harry
After more than two decades in development, Honeymoon with Harry is finally moving forward. Produced by Mike Karz of Gulfstream Pictures, who originally developed the project at New Line Cinema 21 years ago, the film has attracted top-tier talent over the years. The project has seen several major filmmakers and actors attached at different points.
Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis (Crash) wrote an early draft and nearly directed a version that interested Vince Vaughn and Jack Nicholson. Jonathan Demme also considered directing after Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married, co-creator of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) rewrote the script. Dan Fogelman joined in 2015 with a new script, eyeing Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro for the leads under New Line. By 2017, Nick Cassavetes was attached to direct. Through all these changes, Karz remained committed to the project. When the rights lapsed, he fought to revive it, holding onto Fogelman’s version, and now it has finally found a home at Amazon MGM.
