Kevin Costner Announces Departure from ‘Yellowstone’: Here’s What He Said

Days after expressing a willingness to return to “Yellowstone” in an interview with Savannah Guthrie on TODAY, Kevin Costner has reversed his stance.

On June 21, Costner shared a video on Instagram with the caption, “An update for you guys. I’ll see you at the movies.” In the video, he directly addressed “Yellowstone” fans, announcing that he will not be returning to the series.

“After a year and a half of working on ‘Horizon’ and reflecting on ‘Yellowstone,’ that beloved series I cherish and know you do too, I’ve come to the realization that I won’t be able to continue with Season 5B or beyond,” Costner stated.

He acknowledged the profound impact the Paramount series has had on his life and expressed his love for the show and its fans. He then shifted focus to his next career phase, emphasizing his return to filmmaking.

“It was a transformative experience for me. I loved it, and I know you did too. But it’s time for me to move on,” Costner said. “I appreciate the relationship we’ve built, and I’ll see you at the movies.”

Previously, on June 17, Costner had told Savannah Guthrie on TODAY that he hadn’t completely ruled out a return to the show amidst ongoing discussions about his involvement. “I’ve supported it and loved it. It’s been very important to me. I’d love to come back under the right circumstances,” he said. “There’s always a chance, but it has to be the right situation.”

Costner, who portrayed Dutton for five seasons since the show began in 2018, had originally signed a contract for Seasons Five, Six, and Seven. He later indicated that this contract was adjusted to include only Season 5A and 5B. The first half of Season Five aired in 2022, with the second half still pending. Costner mentioned that he never filmed the latter half of Season Five due to the lack of a script and his desire to work more consistently.
