“Kevin Costner Announces New Filming Plans for Horizon 3 & 4 Despite Financing Challenges and Mixed Reviews”

Kevin Costner remains optimistic about the future of the Horizon: An American Saga franchise despite significant box office setbacks. Chapter 1, released on June 28, struggled financially, earning only $34.3 million against its $50 million budget. This underperformance led to the distributor canceling the theatrical release of Chapter 2, putting the subsequent films at risk. However, Costner is determined to complete the saga and has already begun production on Chapter 3, with plans to shoot both the third and fourth installments back-to-back in spring 2025.

Despite mixed reviews—Chapter 1 holds a 49% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes while audiences gave it a 70% score—the franchise’s future is uncertain. Chapter 2 is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and its reception could influence further distribution decisions. Although the box office performance has been poor, Chapter 1 is available for streaming on Max, which may help its financial recovery. Costner’s personal investment of nearly $40 million and his commitment to the project could still attract additional financing, though the likelihood of theatrical releases for future installments seems slim.
