Kevin Costner Announces Start of Horizon: Part 3 Filming with Behind-the-Scenes Photos
Kevin Costner Confirms Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 3 Has Begun Filming
After earlier reports pointed to a June production start, Kevin Costner has officially confirmed that filming is underway on Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 3. The third installment in Costner’s ambitious Western epic continues to expand on a sweeping narrative set during the Civil War era, following a diverse cast of characters—from gunslingers and Union soldiers to settlers and farmers—caught in the tide of America’s westward expansion.
Costner, who co-wrote, directed, and produced the first two chapters, also stars in the series alongside a star-studded ensemble that includes Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Danny Huston, and Jamie Campbell Bower, among others. In a new behind-the-scenes photo shared on social media, Costner is seen directing a group of Native American actors on set, marking a major milestone in the project’s development. His caption reflected on the surreal feeling of the first film’s impending release, encouraging audiences to “see what we’ve put together for you.”
Is Costner Pushing the Horizon Saga Too Quickly?
The Horizon saga has been a passion project for Costner since the late 1980s, though it only began gaining momentum in 2022. Originally envisioned as a four-part series to be shot back-to-back, the plan shifted after Warner Bros. greenlit the second installment following the start of production on the first. Chapter 2 began filming in Spring 2023, but the third film was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, as well as funding issues.
Despite the delays, Costner appears determined to maintain momentum—raising questions about whether the fast-paced production schedule could impact the quality of the films. Early reactions to Horizon: Chapter 1, which premiered at Cannes, were mixed. Critics praised the film’s scope and ambition but took issue with its pacing and narrative incompleteness. Comparisons have already been made to Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon films, which were similarly criticized for feeling like incomplete chapters of a larger story.
With only 25 reviews currently available for the first Horizon film and Chapter 2 still unseen by critics, it remains to be seen whether Costner will adapt to early feedback or continue forging ahead with his original vision. The quick turnaround could limit opportunities to make course corrections, but it could also speak to a clear and confident direction for the saga’s future.
