Kevin Costner Calls on Trump to Rethink MAGA Policies

Kevin Costner Urges Focus on History in Education, Calls for Separation of Politics and Film

Actor and director Kevin Costner recently expressed his desire for a stronger emphasis on history in American education, suggesting a shift away from a math-dominated curriculum. Speaking amid recent changes in the education space under President Donald Trump, the Dances With Wolves filmmaker stated:

“I wish we would have a giant shift in education where history dominated more than math. The people that are really good at math, they’re going to search out math anyway – because that’s who they are, they’re just built that way.”

Costner emphasized the importance of historical knowledge, stating that it helps everyone better understand their roots:

“Everybody can understand where they come from.”

Known for his deep interest in American culture and history—reflected in films centered around the Old West and baseball—Costner graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in business administration in 1978. He returned to speak at the university in 2007, where he encouraged students to follow their intuition:

“There’s no blueprint for success… What’s really interesting is how you’re going to do it.”

The Yellowstone star has remained relatively quiet about politics in recent years, opting for a more balanced approach during increasingly divisive times. While attending a Super Bowl event in New Orleans earlier this year, Costner underscored the need to keep filmmaking and politics separate:

“Filmmaking should have nothing to do with politics. I think you make the best movie you can for an audience and understand that… you have a chance. Every so often, you have a chance to do something meaningful. And sometimes it’s just pure fun. Movies don’t have to be important, but they have to have an audience in mind.”

Costner added that the moviegoing experience transcends politics:

“It’s not about the party in office – it’s about the people sitting in the dark.”
