Kevin Costner Delivers Iconic ‘Barbie’ Monologue at 2024 Golden Globes
Cowgirl Barbie, This One’s for You
Kevin Costner may be best known for his gritty roles in Yellowstone and The Bodyguard, but at the 81st Golden Globe Awards on January 7, 2024, he surprised everyone by channeling an entirely different kind of icon: Barbie.
In one of the night’s most unexpected and memorable moments, Costner joined Barbie star America Ferrera onstage to present the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series. What started as playful banter quickly turned into a viral crossover between the cinematic worlds of Yellowstone and Barbie — something no one had on their 2024 bingo card.
America began by gushing over Costner’s legendary goodbye scene with Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard, admitting it still gives her chills. In response, Costner flipped the script — literally — by reciting, word-for-word, Ferrera’s powerful monologue on womanhood from Barbie. The moment left the audience stunned.
“It’s literally impossible to be a woman. You’re so beautiful, you’re so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough,” he delivered, quoting Ferrera’s emotional speech to Margot Robbie’s Barbie in the film.
A visibly surprised Ferrera played along, joking, “Did you, Kevin Costner, memorize my monologue about womanhood from Barbie?” To which Costner deadpanned, “No.”
He followed up with a thoughtful reflection on why the monologue struck such a chord:
“But it’s an important message, and it always serves to remind me what’s possible in films. When we get it right — when film is working at its very best — it’s about moments you never forget.”
Costner continued, “A look, a touch, a kiss, a speech… and you just had one of those moments. Every actor nominated tonight knows the power of great writing — the kind that lives on forever.”
Ferrera brought the house back to laughter with a cheeky closer: “Wow. So you’re not going to do the rest of my monologue right now on national television?”
From leading the pack with nine nominations to winning two Golden Globes — including Best Original Song for Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” and the inaugural Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award — Barbie certainly made its mark. And thanks to Costner’s unexpected tribute, it’s clear that Greta Gerwig’s world of pink has found fans in places we never imagined.
