Kevin Costner Discusses Yellowstone’s Future Without John Dutton: An Unfinished Journey
Kevin Costner Discusses the Future of Yellowstone Without John Dutton
Kevin Costner has shared his thoughts on how Yellowstone will continue without the family patriarch, John Dutton. The Hollywood icon’s departure from the series comes just before the final episodes of Season 5B, set to premiere on November 10.
While the specifics of John Dutton’s exit remain under wraps, it’s clear that his children—Beth (Kelly Reilly), Kayce (Luke Grimes), and Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley)—will take center stage in the unfolding narrative. Costner believes this shift is a natural progression for the story.
In an interview with ET, Costner stated, “Obviously, it can go on. You know, I have children. So, you make the story about them.” This change draws parallels to HBO’s Succession, where a key character departs shortly before the series finale, leaving chaos in their wake. Similarly, the absence of a patriarch was a pivotal theme in the first season of Game of Thrones.
If past trends are any indication, the Dutton children are likely to face escalating challenges once John is no longer in the picture.
Despite his exit, Costner hinted that a return to the Yellowstone universe isn’t entirely off the table. He remarked, “Who knows? Some things have a way of circling back. Five seasons was a lot for us to do, and I think that story is not finished.”
Yellowstone has already expanded through prequel series like 1883 and 1923, and Paramount has plans for more sequels and prequels, including 1944, set during World War II. Additionally, reports suggest a spin-off titled The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Patrick J. Adams, along with another series called 2024.
