Kevin Costner Earns Special Filmmaker Distinction from Motion Picture Sound Editors

Kevin Costner to Receive Filmmaker Award from Motion Picture Sound Editors; Greg Hedgepath to Be Honored for Career Achievement

The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) have announced that acclaimed actor and director Kevin Costner will receive the organization’s prestigious Filmmaker Award at the 72nd Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards, taking place this Sunday in Los Angeles. In addition, veteran supervising sound editor Greg Hedgepath will be honored with the Career Achievement Award.

MPSE President David Barber praised Costner’s legacy in a statement:
“Kevin Costner has captivated audiences with powerful storytelling throughout his remarkable career. From sweeping Westerns to intimate dramas, he has used sound as a vital element of cinematic immersion. His passion for sound is especially evident in his latest epic, Horizon: An American Saga. We are thrilled to recognize his outstanding contributions to the art of storytelling through sound in film and television.”

Barber also lauded Hedgepath’s decades-long impact on the craft:
“Greg Hedgepath is a true titan in the world of sound. His contributions span genres and generations — from the pulse-pounding action of Speed and Twister, to the emotional depth of Selma and Straight Outta Compton. He is a master craftsman and innovator whose work continues to inspire. This award celebrates the profound influence he has had on the industry.”

Costner, a two-time Oscar winner for Best Picture and Best Director for Dances with Wolves (1990), has directed several acclaimed films including The Postman (1997), Open Range (2003), and Horizon: An American Saga (2024). Each of his previous directorial efforts has earned Golden Reel Award nominations.

Greg Hedgepath’s extensive credits include Blade (1998), Hustle & Flow (2005), The Incredible Hulk (2008), and Dolemite Is My Name (2019). He is a two-time Golden Reel Award winner from 10 nominations and received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Live from Baghdad in 2003. Despite his many accolades, he has yet to be nominated for an Oscar.
