Kevin Costner Embraces Bold New Role Following Horizon Setbacks
Amid the challenges and uncertain future surrounding Horizon: An American Saga, Kevin Costner is trading his saddle for a surfboard in his next venture. The acclaimed actor and director is set to star in Headhunters, an upcoming surfing thriller where he takes on multiple roles.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Costner will not only star in but also produce Headhunters, a collaboration between his Territory Pictures and Scott Steindorff’s Stone Village Films. This film marks the directorial debut of renowned cinematographer Steven Holleran, who co-wrote the screenplay with Costner. Currently, various studios and streaming platforms are vying for the movie’s rights, with Station Eleven and The Pope’s Exorcist star Daniel Zovatto joining the cast alongside Costner.
Headhunters combines the vibrant energy of surf culture with elements of horror. Costner plays Lazer, a washed-up American ex-pat with a mysterious past living in Bali. In the idyllic setting, Lazer recruits a group of surfers, led by local photographer Bima, to venture to a nearby island in search of the “perfect wave.” However, their journey takes a dark turn when they encounter an ancient tribe of headhunters determined to protect their territory. The official logline promises an adventure that transforms into a survival story of epic and bloody proportions in what appears to be paradise but is closer to hell.
Steindorff expressed his enthusiasm about reuniting with Costner, stating, “For decades, my friend Kevin and I have been searching for the right project to collaborate on. This is one of the best scripts I have seen in my career. Kevin is a legendary actor who brings depth and charisma to his roles, and has co-written an iconic horror script with Steve.” Holleran echoed this sentiment, calling it “an honor and dream come true” to co-write the script with Costner, highlighting how his filmmaking journey began in the ocean shooting surf videos in California as a teenager.
Costner’s previous project, Horizon, did not meet expectations, as Chapter 1 of the four-part series struggled to recoup its $50 million budget. Despite its rocky start, it has found some success on streaming and home video. In Horizon, Costner stars alongside Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, and Giovanni Ribisi.
