Kevin Costner Explains Decision to Cast Sons in ‘Horizon’
Kevin Costner Announces Another Son Joining ‘Horizon’ After Backlash Over Casting Hayes
Kevin Costner has revealed that another one of his children will be appearing in his Horizon: An American Saga film series, following criticism over casting his 15-year-old son, Hayes, in the first installment.
While Costner didn’t disclose the specific role his eldest son, Joe, will play in the upcoming sequel, he confirmed Joe’s involvement in the second film. Hayes portrayed Nathaniel Kittredge in the first chapter of the Western saga.
In a recent interview, the Oscar-winning actor and director joked that he’s been trying to “find ways to trap” his kids into acting — before clarifying that he’s never pressured them to follow in his Hollywood footsteps.
“[Hayes] did it, he was good in it, he listened, he cared. He was worried — and that’s what you want. I’m just so happy that he has that moment, this little chapter at the beginning of his life,” Costner said. “I haven’t pushed my children into acting, and this might be his only time doing it. But he’s memorable. I’ll never forget that experience.”
After the first film’s release, some fans questioned Costner’s decision to cast Hayes, who had no prior acting experience. Costner defended the choice, saying it was a personal one.
“I selfishly wanted him with me during those few weeks,” he explained. “We’d drive to set together every day, and he would whisper. He didn’t have a lot of experience, but he’s really beautiful in the movie.”
