Kevin Costner Eyes New Career Path Following Recent Box Office Disappointment
Kevin Costner Embraces New Genre with Upcoming Comedy Role
Kevin Costner is stepping into new territory. The Oscar-winning actor is set to star in his first-ever comedy following the underwhelming box office performance of Horizon, his latest directorial and acting project. This new venture comes after his departure from the popular TV series Yellowstone, where he played the iconic role of John Dutton.
In Yellowstone, Costner portrayed a rugged patriarch fighting to protect his family ranch from powerful interests—a role that earned him critical acclaim and solidified his place as a television powerhouse. However, with his sights now set on fresh opportunities, the 70-year-old star is ready to explore a lighter side of storytelling.
Teaming Up with Jake Gyllenhaal
Costner has reportedly signed on with Amazon MGM Studios to star alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in a new film titled Honeymoon with Harry, a blend of drama and comedy based on Bart Baker’s 2016 novel. The project will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, known for their work on Crazy, Stupid, Love and This Is Us.
The story follows Gyllenhaal’s character, who embarks on a soul-searching journey with his late fiancée’s father—played by Costner—after losing her just days before their wedding. The emotionally charged yet humorous plot offers Costner a chance to showcase a different dimension of his acting abilities.
Staying Driven Despite Setbacks
While Horizon didn’t make a strong mark at the box office, Costner has remained optimistic about the project. He emphasized that the creative process and storytelling journey meant more to him than its commercial performance.
“For me, it’s not about a number on a screen,” he shared. “It’s about the craftsmanship and what it took to bring it to life.”
Costner has made it clear that he isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Retirement isn’t part of his vocabulary. Instead, he’s focused on pushing forward with passion, driven by imagination and hard work. The actor added that he doesn’t follow a “bucket list” approach to life—he simply follows what excites him and keeps his eyes open for the next great opportunity.
“I don’t have someone behind the scenes calling the shots,” Costner explained. “My imagination leads me, and that’s how I’ve always lived.”
Still Believing in Horizon
Despite the lukewarm reception, Costner remains confident in Horizon‘s long-term impact. In a previous interview, he noted that critics and audiences may not grasp its full value immediately—but he believes the film will stand the test of time.
“They might look at the numbers today,” he said, “but this story is about legacy. It’s something parents will show their kids years from now.”
Horizon, which explores themes like migration, survival, and American history, holds personal meaning for Costner, and he hopes its message will resonate with future generations.
Legal Troubles Surface
Amid his professional pursuits, Costner is also facing legal controversy. In May, he was named in a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Devyn LaBella, a stunt performer who worked on Horizon 2.
LaBella alleged that during production, she was asked to step in for actress Ella Hunt in a physically intense scene after Hunt declined to perform it. According to the lawsuit, Costner failed to adequately inform or prepare LaBella for the scene, which involved a violent interaction with co-star Roger Ivens.
She claimed the experience left her feeling humiliated and traumatized. After taking time off to recover, LaBella alleged she was excluded from the set upon her return.
Costner has not publicly commented on the allegations, and further developments in the case remain pending.
Looking Ahead
Despite recent challenges—both professional and personal—Kevin Costner is looking forward with determination. With a new genre to explore and a major studio backing his latest project, the seasoned actor seems ready to turn the page and embrace a new chapter in his storied career.
