Kevin Costner Faces Lawsuit From ‘Horizon’ Actor Alleging Misconduct in Filming Scene
Stunt Double Sues Kevin Costner Over Unscripted Scene in Horizon: An American Saga
Devyn LaBella, a stunt double on Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2, has filed a lawsuit against director Kevin Costner and the film’s producers, alleging she was subjected to a traumatic and unscripted scene involving simulated sexual violence, without prior notice or the presence of an intimacy coordinator.
LaBella, who served as the lead stunt double for actress Ella Hunt, claims the scene was abruptly added during filming in May 2023. According to the complaint, the additions involved a male actor aggressively climbing on top of Hunt’s character and pulling up her skirt—actions not included in the original call sheet.
The lawsuit states that Hunt declined to perform the newly added scene, leaving the production to call in LaBella as a last-minute stand-in. LaBella alleges she was not briefed on the nature of the scene until after filming began, and that no intimacy coordinator was present—violating both industry protocols and union requirements.
LaBella is seeking a public apology along with unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, citing lasting emotional distress from the experience. She contends the production failed to meet SAG-AFTRA standards, which require 48 hours’ notice and written consent for scenes involving nudity or simulated sex.
Attorney Marty Singer, representing Costner, dismissed the claims as “meritless,” asserting that LaBella had rehearsed the scene and signaled her consent. He further described the lawsuit as a “shakedown attempt,” referencing LaBella’s post-production interactions—including a thank-you dinner with the stunt coordinator and a follow-up message with heart emojis—as inconsistent with her legal claims.
Horizon: Chapter 2 is part of Costner’s planned four-part Western saga. Following the underperformance of the first chapter, which grossed $11 million on a $100 million budget, the second chapter’s theatrical release was canceled.
